The Averett University men’s volleyball team competed in its first conference match of the season against Bridgewater College, falling 3–1 in a hard fought contest that marked the beginning of conference play for the Cougars.
Entering the match with high energy and focus, Averett looked to set the tone early against Bridgewater’s squad. The opening set started off hot on both sides, with Averett showing offensive aggression and high level communication on the court. Averett capitalized on important scoring opportunities and maintained momentum late in the set to secure the early advantage and take a 1–0 lead in the match.
Head coach Christopher Tiller felt the team showed promise in their conference debut despite the outcome.
“For the first ODAC game for the team, it went well,” Tiller said. “Bridgewater did a good job protecting their home floor, and we did a good job taking it to them early, we just couldn’t continue the pressure.”
Bridgewater answered in the second set, increasing defensive pressure and finding success through offensive aggression. While Averett continued to compete going point for point, Bridgewater gained momentum and evened the match at one set apiece.
According to Tiller, missed opportunities played a major role in the match’s turning point.
“I think we left a lot on the table in terms of our offensive firepower and pressure on their block,” he said. “We missed a lot of chances to extend the game and keep our winning streak going.”
The third set was still high intensity and competitive, with both teams battling for control. Averett showed toughness defensively and continued to go head to head offensively, but Bridgewater’s consistency in impactful moments allowed them to pull ahead and take a 2–1 lead.
In the fourth set the Cougars were fighting to stay in the game, showing determination and effort. Despite their efforts Bridgewater was able to close out the set and secure the match victory.
Despite the loss, Tiller emphasized the team’s mentality as one of their biggest strengths.
“Our mentality is a huge strength,” he said. “We are a never-say-die kind of group, and it allows us to continuously show up in games.”
As conference play continues, Averett is focused on development and growth, specifically in a few technical areas.
“We are continuing to focus on our serve and pass skills,” Tiller said. “We’re also adding new skills to our toolbox, including some middle work that will really open up the game for us.”
Looking ahead, Tiller is eager for the challenges that come with conference play.
“I’m looking forward to more conference games and continuing to test our squad,” he said.
The match marked an important first step into ODAC play for Averett’s men’s volleyball team, providing valuable experience as the Cougars prepare for the remainder of their conference schedule.
