My name is Thomas Heaney III, and my journey to becoming a Cougar and now graduating as a Cougar next month has been full of surprises and challenges. I have been blessed to spend all of it in Danville, Virginia, even though I never imagined that would be the case.
During my sophomore year of high school, I became the youngest Winston-Salem State baseball commit in the program’s history. It was my dream school, only about 10 minutes from home. A year later, I received the news that the baseball program was being shut down. I was angry and frustrated, and suddenly I was back to square one.
I received an offer from Averett, my only other real offer, and as someone who was homeschooled, the idea of living an hour from home made my anxiety spike. But I wanted to keep chasing my dream, so I took the leap. I honestly did not think I would last more than a week here. Being surrounded by a family away from home made it possible.
Making it through my first night showed me that I could do it again, which I did throughout my first semester. I slowly realized that I was turning a situation I did not want into something that became a blessing. Anytime I needed something, there was always someone willing to help. Students, faculty and staff were all in it together, and I felt that every day.
The people I have met here have changed my life. It has not been easy, but I owe so much of my growth into adulthood to the Averett community and the city of Danville. I found my voice through the Sports Information Department, where I broadcast more than 200 games. I spoke in front of many classes and presented projects, things a shy homeschooled kid never believed he could do. I also got involved in running at the Crossing at The Dan, finding a passion for watching every sunset on the bridge.
Many Averett students share a bond because our paths come from all over. For some, this was their first choice. For others like me, it was our only shot. But there are blessings in the path you never expected to take. I am going to miss all of Averett’s gifts and imperfections. There is so much beauty in every corner of this school and town if you choose to see it.
