The Averett University men’s volleyball team delivered an impressive and encouraging performance during their Fall Play Date scrimmage, according to Head Coach Christopher Tiller, who reflected on the team’s early season progress and mindset.
Coach Tiller shared that he was pleased with how the group competed throughout the day. “The team performed well. Every game was a fight, and the little things we have been focusing on in practice were excellent,” he said. The team’s consistency and attention to detail were evident across multiple matchups.
A major highlight for Tiller was the team’s toughness under pressure. “Mental toughness was a strong point,” he said. The Cougars also showed “strong serve receive” which is a key area the team has been working to strengthen. According to Tiller, it became a bright spot that kept Averett competitive in each game.
When asked whether the team executed the way he hoped, Tiller acknowledged both progress and room for growth. “Of course we always want more, but the foundations of what we are building are starting to solidify, and the future looks bright,” he explained. The scrimmage gave him a clear glimpse of how the team’s training is beginning to translate into live competition.
This play date also marked Tiller’s first time seeing his athletes compete against outside opponents as a unit. “It was my first time with the boys against other teams, and it was nice to gain a picture of how we will react to adversity and how much fight and drive this team has.” The experience helped him better understand the team’s competitive identity and resilience.
Looking ahead, Tiller believes the scrimmage was invaluable in preparing for the upcoming season. “It gave me a clear picture of how our group stacks up against the competition this year, as well as the direction we need to grow as a team to win.” With the foundation set and a motivated roster, Tiller is confident the Cougars are heading in the right direction.
The Averett Men’s Volleyball program enters the season with renewed energy, strong early chemistry, and a clear vision under Coach Tiller’s leadership, making this year’s campaign one full of potential.
