Reverend Sean Timmons
It is my pleasure to introduce Reverend Sean Timmons, who serves as University Chaplain and Spiritual Life Leader at Averett University in Danville, an individual whose academic preparation and campus ministry are shaping the spiritual life of our community in meaningful and inclusive ways. Sean Timmons holds the degree of Master of Divinity (M.Div.) and brings several years of ministerial experience to his role at Averett
He joined the Averett community in October 2023 when he was named Director of the Office of Spiritual Life and University Chaplain. In his role, he is responsible for guiding spiritual formation, supporting student-led faith initiatives, and collaborating with the larger campus and local community.
On campus, Reverend Timmons has created a presence that is dynamic, and Christ-centered. The Office of Spiritual Life under his leadership offers a wide array of programs: for example, a Campus Worship service held on 1st and 2nd Thursdays at 11:15 a.m., a creative faith program on 2nd & 4th Thursdays, and a campus bible study on Sundays and selected evenings.
“He emphasizes that while Averett has historical Christian roots, the spiritual life program is designed to be welcoming to any faith background (or none), reflecting the diversity of the student body.”
His weekly routine combines quiet personal preparation (often a morning of prayer or reflection) with meetings: one-on-ones with students, coordination with faculty and staff, and planning sessions with student spiritual-life leaders. He also nurtures off-campus engagement: the Spiritual Life Office partners with local community congregations ( First Baptist, Episcopal Church of the Epiphany, First Presbyterian, and Life Church) to offer students service opportunities and broader connections.
So In introducing Chaplain Sean Timmons, Averett not only welcomes a seasoned minister with strong academic credentials, but also affirms a vision of spiritual life that is active, student-centered and integrated into campus culture drawing others towards Jesus. Under his leadership, the Office of Spiritual Life is poised to assist students in exploring the faith, developing leadership, connecting to community, and growing as a whole.
And personally, as a Spiritual Life leader, I can say he has been doing his job very well, and continues to learn as we are all learning with him as well.
