Erick Quintanilla is a freshman from Woodbridge, Va. He came to Averett University to play lacrosse, but his passion for soccer meant that he has become a dual-sport athlete for the cougars.
He wasn’t a soccer player nor a lacrosse player until a couple of years ago, when he grew up there was something else that he enjoyed more.
“Up until a couple of years ago I preferred martial arts.” Quintanilla, who majors in marketing, said, “I have a black belt in taekwondo, and I work as an instructor when I am back home. I feel like the coordination you need in taekwondo has helped me a lot with getting around the pitch and moving my feet both in soccer and lacrosse.”
His interesting background, combined with his love for the game means that his collegiate career will be more action-packed than most.
“It is very demanding but fulfilling at the same time.” Quintanilla said, “The sheer hours we spend on practice and games means that time-management becomes difficult. But I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
Being at Averett means that you are surrounded by fellow athletes, and being a part of two teams, who are a part of so different social groups means that you get to interact with many different people.

“I use a lot of Spanish when we play soccer. On and off the pitch.” Quintanilla said, “Whilst with the Lacrosse team its English, but I enjoy hanging out with both teams equally. It’s great to have so many friends and so many people to be with.”
Days can be long, so the need to disconnect and take some time off is important for Quintanilla.
“I really appreciate my time off.” Quintanilla said, “A couple of times I have gone back to my hometown and been with my family, but usually when I don’t have that much time I like to watch a movie, catch up on homework or play pool. It’s a good way to keep my mind off of sports and keep it as a hobby rather than a chore.”
The Averett men’s soccer team are done with their season, whilst the Averett men’s lacrosse team kicks off their season Saturday feb. 7 at 11.a.m against Savannah College of Art and Design at home.
