Danville, Va. — The Averett University wrestling team officially began its 2025 season with the annual Wrestle-Offs, held Friday afternoon inside the E. Stuart James Grant Center. The event featured intense, head-to-head matchups as teammates battled for starting spots and set the tone for the upcoming season.
The Wrestle-Offs serve as one of the most important preseason traditions for the Cougars. Each year, wrestlers face off within their weight classes to earn a place in the varsity lineup before Averett’s first dual meet. The matches also give coaches an opportunity to evaluate each athlete’s progress after weeks of training and conditioning.
“This is what we train for,” said freshman wrestler Horacio Bowen. “Everyone in the room wants that starting spot, so you’ve got to bring your best every single match. It’s competitive, but it makes us all better.”
The atmosphere in the Grant Center was electric, with teammates, coaches, and fans cheering as each bout unfolded. Every match was a test of skill, and determination reflecting the high standards of Averett’s wrestling culture.
Several underclassmen impressed with their performances, while returning veterans demonstrated why they’re leaders in the program. The competitive energy highlighted the team’s depth and promise heading into another strong year in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC).
“The Wrestle-Offs are like a preview of what’s coming this season,” said junior Patrick Burdsall. “It’s a chance to prove yourself and show the team you belong.”
With the Wrestle-Offs now complete, the Cougars will turn their focus toward their first official competition of the season. The team hopes to build on last year’s success and continue to make an impact both regionally and nationally in Division III wrestling.
The Averett wrestling program continues to grow as one of the most competitive in the ODAC, and the annual Wrestle-Offs remain a proud tradition that sets the standard for excellence each season.
