As diversity and inclusion become more important than ever, Averett University has become a place where advocacy and belonging thrive. The Equality Club has become a powerful space on campus where students have the opportunity to come together in an environment where voices are heard and respected. The club has become an outlet for students where passion is celebrated, and equality becomes a reality felt around campus.

The Equality Club is a student-led organization that is dedicated to building a culture of equality and inclusivity on the Averett Campus. Cayden Holdsworth, a junior at Averett, is an active member in the foundation and growth of the club, working to see the vision continue to come to life.

“The main goal of Equality Club is to be able to have a safe space for anybody to get together and feel included on campus, and feel like they have a place to be themselves,” Holdsworth advocates.

Meeting once a week, the Equality club works to be able to continuously and consistently provide a space for like-minded students to express themselves without the fear of judgement.

“A club meeting looked like everyone was able to hangout and place ideas about what events they would like to hold. The E-Board met once a month where we discussed different event ideas for members and open for campus as well,” Holdsworth said.

The different events hosted by the Equality Club in 2024 created a space of inclusivity and education. Fundraising and budgeting for the events was a task held by the E-Board during planning, and ultimately what brought these ideas to light.

“We held multiple different events such as a movie night pertaining to women, black, and LGBTQ rights, as well as a rainbow picnic on the student lawn,” Holdsworth shares.

While the club has been lacking in members since 2024, it continues to promote the ability to join across campus. An interest meeting is held at the beginning of each school year for prospective members. Reaching out to E-Board members is also encouraged and a simple way to get involved.

“Students should join the Equality Club because it really is for anyone. It’s an easy way to get involved on campus and be able to support one another,” Holdsworth expressed.

The Equality Club is a milestone on Averett’s campus in a world where equity, diversity, and inclusion are most important. The work of the Equality Club is focused on giving individuals a place where they feel safe and comfortable to express themselves, while setting the tone for the rest of campus as well.
