The Averett University Theatre Department premiered its first production of the new year with “Almost, Maine” on Thursday, February 19 and held two other events on the 20th and the 21st. “Almost, Maine,” written by John Cariani, tells nine different stories of love across a small town in the state of Maine. The cast did an excellent job at displaying the relationships between the characters and how they progress to either find love or lose it as the scene goes on. You could feel the enjoyment in the audience as there was a bunch of laughs for example during the scene where Dave and Rhonda (played by Austin and Allison Noblin respectively) were taking off a ridiculous amount of layers of clothing and there was a lot of “aww’s” during the multiple heartful moments of the play.
All the scenes of this play were very well done, and they all kept the same charm and loving tone that made you care about the characters even during the short screen time that they got. My favorite scene from the play was Scene 1: Her Heart where Glory and East (played by Anna Timm and Isaiah Reed respectively) meet after Glory camps on his land to honor her deceased husband under the Northern Lights.
Overall, the play was a blast to watch, the time flew by and the entire cast did a fantastic job with their characters and bringing them to life on stage. Looking forward to the next Averett Theatre production which will be “Lucky Stiff” that will show April 16-18 at 7 p.m. and on April 19 at 2 p.m.
