Averett University baseball wrapped up its annual Navy-Gold World Series with an exciting comeback finish, as Gold won the five-game fall series 3-2 after dropping two of the first three contests.
The series began Oct. 19, with both teams splitting the opening two games before Navy surged ahead behind a dominant performance from junior Jack Turner. The right-hander threw three innings with six strikeouts and added two hits and an RBI at the plate to lead Navy to a 15-5 victory on Oct. 25, giving his team a 2-1 series advantage.
Gold, however, responded with poise, claiming Games 4 and 5 to capture the series. Junior pitcher Josh Gunn delivered a standout outing in Game 4, tossing 6 2/3 innings with seven strikeouts and no earned runs in a 3-0 shutout. Gold sealed the championship the next day with a 6-4 win in the deciding Game 5.
Junior left-handed pitcher Isaiah Bobbitt said the team’s pitching depth played a major role in the series outcome.
“What stood out to me most was definitely the pitching,” Bobbitt said. “Coach JC and Coach Billy gave us pitchers the mindset to just be confident and comfortable on the mound and trust the guys behind you to make the plays.”
The competitive spirit throughout the week was something the Cougars will look to bring into the spring.
“Overall, the competition was good on both ends,” Bobbitt said. “Both teams were focused and ready to compete.”
Averett opens its season Feb. 11, 2026, against Christopher Newport University on FloCollege.
