The Averett University wrestling team is wrapping up the regular season and nationally ranked senior standout Mason Barrett is excited to head into the postseason. Mason is a two-time All-American, two-time Regional champion, ODAC champion, and currently ranked third in the nation and first in the Southeast region at 125 pounds. He also reached the milestone of 100 collegiate wins, being only the third Cougar to reach this accomplishment.
“I’m looking to win a national title and move on from the sport of wrestling,” Barrett said. A communication major, he hopes to be involved in real estate management when he graduates.
Barrett plans to continue the practices that brought him success in the past.
“Nothing is really different this year. It’s just a different place. I still have to go out there and compete the same way,” Barrett said. “ I’m just working on the little things this year… technique, putting the right things in my body, and doing the extra work.”
The Averett Cougars will host the Southeast regional tournament this year for the very first time on February 28th and March 1st. This is the qualifier to the NCAA tournament, where the top three finishers at each weight qualify. Mason Barrett is looking to make history by being Averett University’s first NCAA national champion in wrestling. The NCAA tournament will be hosted in Rhode Island on March 14th and 15th.
