Averett University proudly announces Maria Ochoa as the new Assistant Director of Athletics for Sports Medicine. With a deep connection to the university—having both graduated and worked here for nearly a decade—Ochoa brings experience, dedication, and a commitment to the health and well-being of student-athletes.
When asked what Averett Athletics means to her, Ochoa highlighted the values of “family, unity, inclusivity, and diversity.” She described Averett as a welcoming environment where every individual is valued, reflecting the supportive atmosphere that has kept her at the university for so long.
Ochoa, who earned her undergraduate degree in 2019 and her master’s in 2021, shared her approach to balancing the demands of her role. “Time management is very important for an athletic trainer,” she said. “I like to come in a little earlier, organize my day, and create a to-do list with high-priority tasks.” Despite her busy schedule, Ochoa emphasized her dedication to each athlete, ensuring they feel valued during their time with her.
Having been at Averett for nine years, Ochoa attributes her longevity to the strong sense of community. “The family atmosphere is one of the biggest reasons why I am still here,” she explained, noting how rewarding it is to see students succeed beyond athletics.
Looking ahead, Ochoa has exciting plans for her sports medicine staff. With two new members joining the team, her goal is to support their professional growth and foster a positive environment for both the staff and the student-athletes. “My goal for my staff is for us to work hard, remain positive in adverse situations, and promote a welcoming environment for our student-athletes,” she said.
For those interested in pursuing a career in sports medicine Ochoa shared that becoming an athletic trainer requires a master’s degree in sports medicine and passing a board certification exam. Equally important, she emphasized the need for passion, dedication, and a willingness to learn and teach others.
Reflecting on her career, Ochoa expressed gratitude for her time at Averett. “Our career field can be very challenging with long workdays and responsibilities. However, I could not imagine myself doing anything else,” she said. Her primary concern is the health and safety of student-athletes, but she also aims to make a broader impact, ensuring every athlete leaves her presence with a smile.
Ochoa’s leadership and commitment to her role ensure that Averett’s athletics department will continue to prioritize the well-being and success of its student-athletes for years to come.
