This past weekend students, parents, professors, faculty and alumni of Averett gathered in the celebration of the annually Homecoming weekend. With a total of 4 teams in competition during the weekend, north campus was set for an action filled and memorable Homecoming weekend.

“One of the reasons why I think homecoming is so popular is because it gives us students something to look forward to. We cookout with our friends and family and there are a ton of events throughout the week leading up to homecoming to be a part of.” Said Ty Michelson, a senior majoring in biomedical sciences.

First up, it was Men’s soccer who opened the weekend Friday night on Daly Field with a conference matchup against Bridgewater College, which saw the Cougar’s falling short with a final score of 2-0 in favor of Bridgewater.

“My favorite part about homecoming is the tailgating aspect. It brings a lot of people together from around the world, along with many different cultures.” Said Michelson.

Next up, it was Women’s soccer’s turn to step onto Daly Field on Saturday morning, facing Roanoke College. The match ended with a result of 2-1 with Roanoke College coming out as victor.

”My favorite part of homecoming is to simply just to spend time with my friends the whole day and also to experience the American atmosphere around Homecoming.” Said Paula Ryhsen, a junior majoring in sports administration.

For the main event of the weekend, Averett Football took the field in competition against no. 16 in the nation Randolph-Macon College, who were undefeated in conference play going into the matchup. Randolph-Macon College came out on top with a final score of 55-7.

”I think homecoming is such a popular event because of football and how popular it is. A lot of people follow the sport and likes to show their support to their local teams.” Said Ryhsen.

Lastly, Women’s volleyball, faced Guilford College in the Grant Center. The Cougar’s sealed the victory in a sweep to close out Homecoming weekend 2022.
