DANVILLE, Va. — As Averett University kicked off the fall semester, students filled the campus with a mix of energy and nerves. For many, the first week brought not just new classes, but also new friendships, routines, and challenges.
Freshman Tanner Bridges said that his adjustment was both exciting and overwhelming. “I didn’t think I’d get lost this many times in one week,” he joked,“but my professors and teammates have been so helpful. It already feels like home.”
Upperclassmen were just as energized to return. Junior business major Adrian Samano said he missed the campus atmosphere over the summer. “There’s nothing like being back,” Samano said. “Seeing familiar faces, and getting back to my regular training routine is the best part about Averett. You feel like you’re being productive again.”
For some, balancing academics and athletics was top of mind. First-year wrestler Akram Guliyev admitted the transition hasn’t been easy. “I go from morning class, then head to practice, then I head straight into a two-hour study hall session,” he said. “It’s a lot, but I came here to push myself, and I can already tell I’m growing.”
Averett’s Welcome Week schedule kept the campus buzzing with activity. From ice cream socials and bingo nights to orientation events tailored for commuters and international students, there was something for everyone.
Some students said the week’s events helped them feel more at ease in their new routines, between casual hangouts in the Student Center and the excitement of meeting teammates or club members, “It’s only been a week, but I already feel like I’ve found my place here,” said freshman wrestler Zach Deagle.
As the semester begins, many students said they’re looking forward to the opportunities ahead. Senior business major Jackson Higgins summed it up simply, “It’s my last first week at Averett, and I just want to soak it all in. This place has given me so much, and I’m excited to finish strong.”
