The Averett University men’s lacrosse team hosted its biggest Prospect Day yet, and the energy on the field showed just how much the program is growing. With over 75 players and prospects out there, it wasn’t just a recruiting event it felt like a real snapshot of the team’s future.
Planning was a huge part of making the day run smoothly.
“The most important part of a Prospect Day in my opinion is making sure that you have a solid schedule for everyone that day,” Brian Habick, head men’s lacrosse coach, said. “It’s important to be organized and families want answers as soon as possible so they can plan their trip.”
One of the best parts of the day was how involved the current team was. Nearly 30 players spent the day helping with drills, answering questions, and making recruits feel welcome.
“The most successful part is how our players engage with the recruits,” Giovanni D’Amico, junior men’s lacrosse player said. “They make everyone feel like they are wanted and belong.”
Tours of campus gave families a chance to see more of what Averett offers, from academics to athletics.
“Being able to show off the fleet that Averett has and to show the families my passion here at Averett was very fun to do,” D’Amico said. Leading tours is one of D’Amico’s favorite parts of prospect days.
The day wrapped up with a scrimmage, which gave prospects the chance to showcase their skills in a game setting.
“After watching them in drills all day it was fun to see them truly be able to play in a game setting and for them to stand out amongst the rest,” D’Amico said.
For a young program like Averett lacrosse, Prospect Days mean a lot. They help spread the word about the team and build interest in the community.
“Having a good prospect day gets the Averett name into the community in such a good way and it can grow the interest we have in our program. A bad prospect day could really ruin a program,” D’Amico said.
Coach Page and Coach Munoz played a big role in making the day happen, bringing in a record number of prospects.
“It was an incredible opportunity to see the success that we CAN have as a program,” Habick said. “Now that needs to translate to commits.”
With recruits already showing interest and a record-breaking turnout, it’s clear that Averett lacrosse is on the rise. And if this Prospect Day was any sign, the Cougars are just getting started.
