Averett University’s international students are an important part of the campus community, bringing a variety of cultures, perspectives, and traditions that help shape the university experience. From leadership roles and hosting special events to class discussions, international students contribute in many ways that might not always be noticed. Their success is evident in how well they do after graduation, often going on to thrive in their careers and communities. Averett University’s international student body, from Australia to the United Kingdom, helps make the campus a more dynamic and global learning environment. These students are not only an asset during their time at Averett but continue to build a legacy of success beyond their time on campus.
Daniel Olasoko, a junior in Computer Science from Nigeria, plays an important role in shaping campus life at Averett. He explains how international students bring fresh perspectives to campus.
“We contribute to our peers’ broader worldview by sharing our experiences, food, music, and language,” Olasoko said.
This influence extends beyond the classroom and into campus activities and student organizations, as his impact reaches further through leadership roles. As Vice President of the Student Government Association (SGA), Olasoko ensures that students’ concerns are heard.
“I make sure international students, and all students, feel heard and represented,” Olasoko said.
He also serves as President of the Cougars Activities Board (CAB), where he organizes major events like Homecoming and Spring Fling to help students connect.
“These events help students connect and bond over shared experiences,” Olasoko
said. 
In addition to his leadership roles, Olasoko is also an active member of the African-Caribbean Student Association (ACSA) and the International Students Club, where he works to promote cultural exchange and inclusivity on campus. He is also involved in the Financial Literacy Club, helping students gain valuable knowledge about managing personal finances, and the Esports Club, where he contributes to the growing gaming community at Averett. Olasoko is a prime example of how international students thrive in student organizations, cultural events, and campus discussions.
Despite their contributions, international students face challenges that often go unnoticed. For Olasoko, adjusting to a new culture is one of the most difficult aspects.
“Classroom dynamics, even the way people joke, can feel different,” he says.
In addition to cultural adjustments, international students face employment restrictions due to visa regulations, limiting their ability to gain professional experience. “We miss out on some internships and part-time jobs that can help shape our careers further. ” Olasoko said.
These challenges highlight the additional hurdles international students face while navigating academic and professional opportunities.
While Averett University has made progress in celebrating international students through events like International Education Week and cultural festivals, which provide platforms for them to showcase their traditions, food, and music, Olasoko believes there’s more that can be done to integrate them into everyday campus life.
“We are celebrated during cultural events, but I think we should be highlighted more in everyday campus life,” he says.
To achieve this, Olasoko proposes incorporating international student perspectives into classroom discussions and social media content, as well as creating mentorship programs specifically for international students. By making these changes, he believes Averett could enhance the overall university experience for both international and domestic students.
As a result, international students at Averett University continue to play a vital role in shaping the campus community. Their diverse perspectives and experiences improve the university environment more than just special events. By fully integrating international students into all aspects of campus life, Averett would not only improve their experience but also encourage a richer and inclusive community that benefits all students.
