As the semester reaches its midway point, students may feel the pressures of academics, athletics or general anxiety. Dr. Atticia Bundy, director of counseling, has 20 years of experience helping others try to become the best versions of themselves. Despite the support offered, many students still have questions about what the counseling services provide or where they are located.
“Counseling Services offers free and confidential counseling to enrolled Averett students. We also provide mental health workshops and preventative outreach on campus,” Bundy said. “You might see us at a table in the MPR or Student Center area once a month and we partner with Hearts of Gold Therapy Dogs as well as other community partners.”
Taking the first step in treating your mental health can be scary. However, the process at Averett aims to be simple.
“Students can email us at [email protected] to let us know they are interested in counseling. We will respond back with a link to log in and complete paperwork online. Once you have completed the paperwork, you can schedule an appointment, or we can help you with that process. There is no charge for counseling,” Bundy said. “I want to make sure all students know about our services, that they are free and confidential, and that students would enjoy having someone objective to talk to every week. Hillary Crenshaw and I are both licensed counselors. I have been working with college students for my entire career. We both love working with [them].”
Being aware of the challenges that face young students can help raise awareness as well as aid any stress that might come their way.
“Some of the mental health challenges students face are getting their information about mental health on TikTok and other social media apps. While this information can be helpful, misinformation is easily available as well,” Bundy said. “Students may try something that can be harmful to them. I remember a student telling me that her mother tried something she saw on social media and ended up in the hospital.”
With spring break on its way, you can find your mental peace by emailing [email protected] to schedule an appointment today. The counseling services are located in the front of the Student Success Center.
