Students work tirelessly throughout the semester to get their degree. Thankfully there are various breaks spread out to let students relax from all the stress of school. One of the most well-known breaks is Spring Break. Many college students will be able to enjoy the week of Spring Break by going to a nearby beach and having a week full of partying or exploring a new city. Others, however, will stay on campus or take day trips with their friends.
“For Spring Break, I plan to focus on rest and self-care while also making time for enjoyable activities. With the demands of school, club leadership, and E-sports, I rarely get the chance to truly slow down. This break will be an opportunity to reset and recharge before the other half of the semester. I might also take this time to explore a new interest, whether it is trying a creative project, reading a book, or discovering a new place,” Daniel Olasoko, a junior from Lagos, Nigeria, said.
Spring Break is also a busy time for spring sports including lacrosse, golf, tennis, baseball, softball, track and field, and men’s volleyball. Since Averett University’s student body is a majority athletes, a lot of the students are in season. Even those that are not in season still have some off season lifts or practice schedules to continue.
“A few friends and I are driving up to Toronto. We are leaving from the second to the seventh and staying 20 minutes from the city. One day we’ll go to Niagra Falls and the rest we’ll explore the city. We still practice during the off season, we lift three times a week and practice two times a week, we get spring break off though,” Erika Lindström, junior on the women’s soccer team, said.
For the students that are in season, the week of Spring Break tends to get very busy with lots of games being played. Not only will these student athletes have competitions or games but also practice and lifts during that week.
“Spring Break in season is a welcome break from schoolwork but also full of several tough games. It’s nice to spend a ton of time with the guys without classes to worry about. On days off, the squad prioritizes spending time recovering, working on our game, or getting outside together. This year, we’ll have four games in eight days, so we don’t have time to waste but I’m sure we’ll have lots of fun on and off the field,” Emmett Wood, junior and captain on the men’s lacrosse team, said.
If student athletes aren’t playing at home for their sport, they get to still enjoy a sense of travel during the week of Spring Break. Many of the sports teams get to travel during their season, especially the golf teams having competitions near the coast.
“Usually, we are traveling for a tournament during spring break. Sometimes we will have one on both weekends and sometimes just one weekend. The good thing is we do have a lot of costal tournaments, so we are still able to get a little bit of sunshine and beach time. As a team we do try and get together outside of practice just to hang out and chat,” Madison Masoudpour, junior on the women’s golf team, said.

No matter if students are in or out of season, even if they aren’t student-athletes, the week of Spring Break still is able to be enjoyed. Whether that be on the field, as well as seeing new places, or even at the beach, it is a week that many look forward to.
