The Afro-Caribbean Student Association (ACSA) at Averett University is a vibrant community that brings students together to explore and celebrate the cultures of Africa and the Caribbean. It’s a space where all students, can learn, connect, and appreciate these cultures. ACSA is important for African and Caribbean students, providing them with a “home away from home” where they can feel supported and understood. Through a variety of events and activities, the organization encourages cultural exchange and unity, creating a welcoming environment for everyone at Averett University.
Niara Black, the president of ACSA, has played a key role in shaping the organization. After serving as the secretary for the Caribbean Student Association (CSA) in 2023, Black saw an opportunity to include African culture as well, recognizing the shared similarities between the two cultures. Her leadership has shaped ACSA, bringing students of different Caribbean and African backgrounds together and encouraging them to learn about their shared heritage.
“We want students to openly share their experiences, ideas, and perspectives,” Black said. “Our goal is to highlight African and Caribbean cultures, educate the Averett community, and encourage involvement while giving back.”
One of Black’s most memorable moments with ACSA was the Danville YMCA Welcome Week. This event allowed ACSA members to introduce their cultures to the broader community, connecting with both children and adults. For Black, this experience was meaningful, as it provided an opportunity to share a piece of her culture with others.
“It was an incredible experience explaining our culture to both kids and adults and sharing a taste of where I’m from with our famous drink, ‘switcha’,” Black shared.
Looking ahead, ACSA has some exciting events planned for the spring semester that are sure to engage and inspire the Averett community. One of the highly anticipated events is the Spring Cultural Fashion Show, which will be held during Spring Fling. This will offer a celebration of style and tradition. Another standout event is the Annual Caribbean Splash Bash and Cultural Cook-off, where students will have the opportunity to enjoy delicious traditional dishes while celebrating the vibrant cultures of Africa and the Caribbean. Additionally, ACSA is organizing a Clothing Drive to give back to the Danville community, with donations going to a local school in need. These events reflect ACSA’s commitment to encouraging cultural awareness and making a positive impact both on and off campus.
ACSA has evolved from its roots as the Caribbean Student Association (CSA) into an inclusive organization that now celebrates both African and Caribbean cultures. The primary goal of ACSA is to continue highlighting the connections between these cultures while expanding the organization’s presence across campus to all.
“I hope more students and faculty will get involved in the organization, and that it continues to grow and make a positive impact over time,” Black said.
