Averett University has experienced many changes throughout its 2024-2025 academic year. One recent change comes with April Love-Loveless and her transition from the director of experiential learning to the new director of student success.
Loveless is not new to Averett’s growing family and knows that the university has prepared her for this new role.
“My previous experience has fueled my passion for working with students and fostering meaningful relationships across campus,” Loveless said. “I’ve had the privilege of collaborating with faculty, staff, and students to create an inclusive environment that supports the academic, personal, and professional development of each student. Through personalized guidance, I prioritize holistic student support.”
Within her role as the director of experiential learning, Loveless found many values within her experiences that she can carry over as the new director of student success.
“In my previous role, I developed and led initiatives that fostered student engagement and well-being. One of my most impactful achievements was spearheading the Bonner Leader Program that enhanced students’ sense of belonging and connection to the broader Danville community,” Loveless said. “Additionally, I collaborated with departments across campus to organize experiential learning initiatives. These experiences have honed my ability to build meaningful relationships, develop programs that respond to student needs, and ensure that each individual is supported academically, socially, and emotionally.”
Within her new role, Loveless will be responsible for overseeing and designing initiatives to help the students of Averett University succeed. These initiatives include anything that leads to academic success like tutoring, writing support and academic accommodations. Loveless will oversee the rest of the student success team as well as helping out when needed.
With these new opportunities comes newfound excitement. This is something Loveless has not neglected to notice, finding joy in what is to come.
“What excites me most about this opportunity is the chance to work alongside the incredible Student Success team, whose passion and dedication are evident in all aspects of their work. I’m eager to contribute to an inclusive environment where every student feels valued and supported. The opportunity to collaborate and help students navigate their academic journeys while fostering a sense of belonging at Averett University excites me,” Loveless said.
Loveless has also taken the time to set fresh goals for herself in her new position.
“As I step into this position, my primary goal is to build strong relationships with both the Student Success team and the students we support. I want to prioritize understanding the unique needs of our student population to develop initiatives that promote academic success, personal growth, and a sense of belonging,” Loveless said. “Additionally, I aim to collaborate across campus to strengthen partnerships that contribute to a holistic student experience and ensure that all students have access to the resources and guidance they need to thrive at Averett University.”
While excitement and new possibilities comes with a new position, that still leaves an opening for challenges that Loveless will have to learn how to navigate.
“One potential challenge I anticipate is navigating the unique and evolving needs of a diverse student population. Students face a range of academic, social, and personal challenges, and staying attuned to these varying needs requires adaptability and constant engagement,” Loveless said.
Although a new role may have its challenges, you can always look at what motivated you to take on the new position in the first place.
“What motivates me most is the opportunity to positively impact students’ lives by supporting their growth and success. I’m deeply passionate about creating an environment where every student feels seen, heard, and empowered to thrive,” Loveless said.
By becoming the new director of student success, Loveless hopes to leave a long lasting impact on Averett University and its students.
“My focus will be on building strong relationships, collaborating with campus partners, and developing initiatives that address students’ academic, personal, and social needs,” Loveless said. “Ultimately, I want to ensure that every student has the resources, guidance, and support to achieve their goals and feel a true sense of belonging on campus.”
