As the new season approaches, the Averett women’s lacrosse team is gearing up for an exciting challenge. With a blend of experienced returners, fresh faces, and a renewed focus on fundamentals, this year’s squad is poised to make a strong push for success. We caught up with Head Coach Hannah Mae Ayers to get an inside look at the preparation, key players, goals, and strategies that will shape the season.
The foundation of the Averett’s women’s lacrosse team preparations for the upcoming season revolves around mastering the basics.
“We’ve been working on the fundamentals and proper mechanics, really focusing on conditioning both in and outside the weight room,” Ayers explained.
Emphasizing stamina and endurance will be key for the team to maintain a high level of performance throughout the season, but it’s not just about physical conditioning. The coaching staff is also placing a strong emphasis on communication and leadership, both on and off the field.
“Our team is more than just players, we’re a unit. Leadership will play a crucial role this season,” Ayers noted.
The team’s success will depend on the standout performances of several key players. Senior Faith Bowlin, an offensive dynamo, is one to watch closely. Her strong offensive IQ, excellent cutting ability, and decision-making under pressure make her a constant threat.
“Faith’s ability to create shooting lanes and set up teammates for assists will be a huge asset for us,” Ayers said.
On the defensive side, Sheyla Romero’s leadership will be invaluable.
“Sheyla is the backbone of our defense. Her leadership and composure under pressure help anchor the entire unit,” Ayers noted.
With Romero’s guidance, the defense will be ready to shut down opposing attacks.
A strong team culture is built on leadership, and the captains are expected to lead by example. This season, the captains are playing a significant role both on and off the field, fostering communication and ensuring the team stays motivated through the highs and lows of a long season.
“Leadership and communication are at the forefront of our strategy,”Ayers shared. “Our captains will be instrumental in creating a positive environment and keeping the team focused.”
When asked about the team’s biggest goals, Ayers emphasized the importance of focusing on the little things.
“Success comes from being disciplined in the fundamentals and executing consistently,” she explained.
By mastering essential skills like groundballs, shot placement, and communication, the team hopes to make those actions second nature. If they can execute under pressure, they’ll be positioned for success when it matters most.
This season, the team is also implementing some strategic changes. Porsha Davis, who has primarily been a defender in previous years, will now be playing more of an offensive role.
“Porsha is a great driver, and she handles defensive pressure very well,” Ayers noted.
The addition of new draw-takers will also offer the team more options in the circle.
As a coach, flexibility has been one of the biggest lessons learned over the years.
“Lacrosse is a fast-paced, dynamic game, and things don’t always go as planned,”Ayers said.
Whether it’s injuries, player development, or adjustments based on opponents, the ability to adapt is crucial.
“Flexibility allows us to stay focused and positive even when things don’t go according to plan,”Ayers explained, noting that this mindset will be vital throughout the season.
With a renewed sense of purpose, the Averett women’s lacrosse team is ready to take on the season. From seasoned veterans like Faith Bowlin and Sheyla Romero to the fresh perspectives brought by new players, this team has the talent, leadership, and drive to succeed. As the season unfolds, all eyes will be on their ability to execute the fundamentals, adapt to challenges, and work together to achieve their goals.
