As some seniors prepare to graduate this December, Averett University highlights the journey of students like Cliresa Hall, a communications major from Danville, Virginia, whose college experience has been defined by personal growth, academic success, and meaningful connections.
For Cliresa, transitioning to Averett after her freshman year at Radford University presented challenges. However, she credits the university’s close-knit environment and personalized approach for helping her thrive.
“If I’m honest, it was rough,” Hall said. “I transferred in during my sophomore year, so it was a big adjustment coming from a larger school to a smaller one. But once I got used to it, I really liked it. I felt like I learned a lot more here than I did at a bigger school.”
One of the most impactful aspects of Cliresa’s experience has been the university’s ability to connect with students on a personal level.
“I like that it’s small,” Hall said. “It’s more one one-on-one, and they really get involved with their students. I started off as a history major, but I didn’t really like it. When I switched to the communication program, I found an area I really enjoyed. Even though I’m an introvert, I’ve loved learning about communication and applying it to life.”
Cliresa’s advisor, Susan Huckstep, Professor of Communication Studies and Division Chair of Physical and Psychological Health Sciences, spoke highly of Cliresa’s academic journey and personal growth.
“I am super proud of Cliresa,” Huckstep said. “She’s not only a strong student and an intelligent young lady, but she’s also a genuinely great person. I know she’ll do very well in whatever career she chooses. I also see her as someone who’s going to make a very positive difference in this world.”
Huckstep also noted Cliresa’s thoughtful contributions in class.
“Cliresa may not speak up a lot, but when she does, she always has something significant and important to say,” Huckstep said. “She puts a lot of thought into her words, and her contributions are always valuable.”
Cliresa has excelled in the communications program, completing several projects that have set an impressive mark
“She’s gotten a lot of hands-on experience, including internship type projects,” Huckstep said. “She’s currently working on a capstone at Bible Way Church, and everything she’s done has exceeded expectations. She’s done a fantastic job building her resume here.”
One of Cliresa’s standout experiences was her internship at the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History, which she described as both unique and rewarding.
“It was so fun,” Hall said. “I got to help with their social media page, promote events, and even create events. It was really fun to work at an old haunted house turned museum. I made a lot of friends and am still in contact with the people I worked with.”
When asked about challenges, Cliresa recalled the difficulties she faced in a presentations class early in her transition to the communications program.
“That class was really, really hard,” Hall said. “I was terrified of speaking in front of people. The first few presentations I gave were rough, but as I worked with Huckstep and got to know everyone, I got better. Over time, I’ve become much more comfortable with presenting and talking to people.”
Looking ahead to the future, Cliresa plans to continue her education and pursue a graduate degree.
“I definitely want to further my education,” Hall said. “I’m looking at grad school and plan to stay in the area for now while I work. But grad school is definitely something I’m focused on.”
Huckstep offered words of encouragement as Cliresa prepares for her next steps.
“I would tell Cliresa to continue to be true to herself. She has tremendous ability and can do whatever she sets her mind to,” Huckstep said. “She just needs to remind herself of that and believe in herself.”
Reflecting on her time at Averett, Cliresa expressed gratitude for the growth and connections she’s experienced.
“I just hope people remember the growth we’ve all shared together,” Hall said. “That’s definitely what I’ll remember just changing and growing through this program.”
She also mentioned the meaningful relationships she formed along the way.
“Doctor Huckstep is great, obviously, and I’ve met some really great people like Kendall, Tavion, and Ally,” Hall said. “I hope we can all remember it together as going through this program and growing.”
As Cliresa prepares to graduate, she leaves a legacy of perseverance, growth, and meaningful contributions, embodying the values of Averett University and paving the way for future success!
