Casey Peterson, a junior criminal justice major and a member of the men’s lacrosse team has had an unorthodox journey leading him to Averett. He is a transfer student from St. Andrews where he played for the current head coach at Averett.
“What brought me to Averett was the opportunity to play lacrosse with an exceptional group of guys,” Peterson said.
Much like other Averett students, the chance to continue playing his sport was a major part of him deciding to go to school. Unlike many others, Peterson didn’t go to college right after high school.
He worked full time while he was in the Army Reserves. That time away from school allowed him to create a unique outlook while in college.
“Some of the most impactful moments from my life are when I joined the military,” Peterson said. “Deploying overseas and seeing how others live and how easy we have it in the states compared to others.”
Those experiences have helped him appreciate the opportunities given by attending Averett.
“My favorite part about Averett is the friends I have made,” Peterson said.
Although he has had a lot of experiences on his own to shape who he is as a person, Peterson credits his father for the influence he had on his life.
“I watched how my dad acted and how he carried himself and how he treated people right no matter who they were,” Peterson said. “Everyday I try to be the man my dad is.”
Seeing how important his dad is to him, it makes sense that his friends and family are the key parts of what makes Peterson who he is.
“The things that are most important to me in my life are my faith and the people I have around me,” Peterson said.
With such a good foundation built, Peterson has set himself up for success for years to come.
