“Matt is a dedicated person and someone who is willing to always help someone else when they need it.” Kori Chavis, Junior majoring in Sports Management said. “He has really affected my life by showing me how to be an effective leader when it comes to football.”
Matthew Isom is a 5th year senior that majors in Business Management. Isom has made a name for himself on and off the football field. The ODAC All-Conference Center has been a firm leader in the Housing and Residence Life department at Averett, serving as the Senior Resident Assistant for the Commons Apartments.
Born and raised 30 minutes south of Charlotte in Waxhaw, North Carolina, he grew up with humble beginnings and a strong passion for sports, especially football, and basketball, his first true love. Although Isom had been playing football since he was in the 4th grade, he began to fall in love with the game once he began playing middle school football. From there he attended Parkwood High School, where he helped his team go 7-5 with an All-Conference year at the Center position.
“Growing up, everyone thought I was going to be an NBA star,” Matthew Isom, 5th year senior majoring in Business management, said. “But I ended up barely 6 feet tall with above average handles.”
In 2020, Isom became a student at Averett University, during the midst of the COVID-19 outbreak that brought the entire world to a halt. This outbreak completely changed the way that the School worked. The Football team practiced in smaller groups and Main campus at times felt like a Ghost town compared to before the pandemic. Coming in as a very quiet individual, Isom developed into a strong leader for the Averett Cougars.
“My favorite moment with Averett Football would have to be beating CNU on their home field and successfully recovering the first onside kick in a game I’ve ever been a part of.” Isom said. “What I am going to miss the most is the people, we all know that it’s the people that make Averett.”
In the future, Isom hopes to become a college football coach, so that he can instill in the future generation the hard work and dedication that he has shown through.
