CCECC’S Impact on Hurricane Relief Efforts
In response to recent hurricane devastation in Western North Carolina, the Center for Community Engagement and Civic Collaboration (CCECC) at Averett University mobilized quickly to provide support. This initiative highlighted the center’s role in connecting the university community with local partners to facilitate relief efforts.
April Love-Loveless, a key figure at the CCECC, explained how the center acts as a catalyst, bridging students, staff, and faculty with community partners.
“We’re here to lead capacity-building transformations in the Dan River Region,” she stated.
During the hurricane relief efforts, the CCECC served as an intermediary, coordinating activities between West Main Baptist Church, community donations, and campus contributions. The CCECC’s response was organized in collaboration with campus chaplain Sean Timmons and the Aviation campus. Love-Loveless emphasized the importance of teamwork.
“It was essential for us to come together and streamline our efforts to ensure that everything went smoothly.” This partnership was crucial for the timely delivery of supplies to those affected by the hurricane.
The donations came from a variety of sources, including community contributions from West Main Baptist Church and donations from Averett faculty and staff.
Love-Loveless reported an impressive array of items collected, noting, “We received everything from clothes and hygiene products to canned food, bottled water, and blankets. It was amazing to see such generosity.” This diverse support illustrated the community’s commitment to helping in times of need.
For the CCECC, engaging in community service is vital for students. Love-Loveless articulated that donating and giving back allows students to connect with the community they call home during their college years.
“We want students to learn about the issues their community faces and feel empowered to make a difference,” she explained.
This engagement not only addresses pressing issues but also prepares students for future civic responsibilities, fostering a sense of belonging and empathy. Love-Loveless expressed gratitude for the hard work and dedication of the community that rallied around the hurricane relief efforts.
“It is always so cool to see a community come together during a time of need,” she remarked, highlighting the collective spirit that drives these initiatives. “When people unite for a common cause, it truly showcases the strength of our community.”
The CCECC’s involvement in hurricane relief showcases the power of community collaboration. By connecting students, faculty, and local organizations, the center plays a crucial role in addressing urgent needs and fostering a culture of service.
As Love-Loveless stated, “Together, we can create meaningful change and support each other during challenging times.”
As the CCECC continues to facilitate such efforts, it strengthens the bonds within the Dan River Region, exemplifying the positive impact of giving back.
