The Averett women’s golf team kicked off their fall season in Granville, Ohio, on August 31-September 1 at the Lynn Schweizer Invitational. The team placed 14th overall, but has only improved since then.
On September 23-24, the team competed at the Bridgewater Invitational in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Not only did they secure 3rd place overall, but two members set new career lows. Both sophomore Manuela Pacheco and junior Hannah Gammons surpassed their previous records, shooting their lowest rounds yet.
“I have improved so much and come so far in the time I’ve been at Averett,” said junior Hannah Gammons. “I’m so excited to see what else I can do and achieve.”
Senior Caroline Tamburstuen also had a standout performance, placing 4th individually at the Bridgewater Invitational and leading the Cougars with a score of 11 over par.
On October 7-8, the Cougars participated in the Knights Invitational hosted by Southern Virginia University in Nellysford, Virginia. The team finished in 4th place overall, while senior Caroline Tamburstuen clinched the win. She triumphed in the playoff for 1st place, marking the 3rd victory of her career.
“This one was extra special to me because I was a couple strokes behind going into the last day,” said Tamburstuen. “However, I kept my cool and ended up being tied for first.”
“I then had to keep fighting because of the playoff,” she continued. “Therefore, I feel an extra sense of accomplishment because I really had to play hard for the win.”
Tamburstuen was also named Golfer of the Week for the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, marking her 7th time receiving this honor in her career.
The Averett women’s golf team is set to compete in the upcoming Chick-fil-A Invitational hosted by Berry College in Mount Berry, Georgia, on October 28-29.
