As the 2024 fall semester continues, it is impossible to overlook the tradition of Homecoming. But what really makes Homecoming special?
“Homecoming week is a great way to see a little bit of everything that Averett has to offer like the themed dress up days and the different events hosted by Student Engagement and athletic events throughout the week,” Lyndsey Sears, coordinator of athletics programming and operations, said.
With all the opportunities that are present with Homecoming, it can be difficult to know where to start.
“The biggest events that are featured this year will be our Mardi Gras Block Party to kick off Homecoming,” Morgan Dearing, graduate assistant in student involvement, said.
Between athletics and Main Campus, there are going to plenty of events and activities for students to partake in. It takes a lot of work from the whole school and all the campuses to put on a successful homecoming.
“I would say that students should really try to get involved in all aspects for Homecoming week this week,” Sears said.
Sears speaks for the whole staff when she emphasizes student involvement. After all, it is hard to have events if no students show up. Especially when so much hard work has been put into the planning and execution. It really is a whole school experience.
“As most of all departments are on the same page,” Dearing said. “We work together to ensure the best, yet eventful homecoming can happen for students.”
Looking at what is planned for the weekend of homecoming and how the athletes will be put on display, the tailgating can’t be overlooked, and this year is going to have something special in store.
“The student-athlete tailgate competition is going to be a fun event that we didn’t do last year that gives student-athletes the opportunity to work between teams and host a really fun tailgate experience for everyone,” Sears said.
