On September 18th, the Averett Counseling Services hosted “Wiggles & Wags,” an event designed to help students de-stress during the week by spending time with adorable dogs and puppies. In addition to the tail wags and cuddles, the event also featured information on mental health awareness and suicide prevention.
“Mental health is just as important as your physical health,” said Bundy. “They really go hand in hand. If you are not feeling well physically, then you are not going to feel well mentally, and vice versa.”
Not all signs of mental health issues are as overt as one might think. Simple changes in lifestyle and behavior can be significant indicators that someone is struggling. Developing self-awareness about your feelings is an essential skill to practice. Building strong connections around campus can also enhance mental health, creating a more supportive college experience.
“As a staff member and alum, Averett has helped me with my mental health in many ways,” said Morgan Dearing, director of student involvement. “I can lean on my coworkers in times of need, and they help me find opportunities for support.”
In collaboration with Averett Counseling Services, the Averett SAAC and Student Body Government hosted a kiosk in the Student Center MPR focused on suicide prevention. Aaron Maddox, a first-year student majoring in health science with a minor in coaching, helped spread the word while distributing gifts to students who offered a listening ear.
Averett Counseling Services provides free counseling sessions, which can be scheduled by emailing [email protected] to sign up for a time.
