Averett University’s athletic teams are off to a strong start this season, highlighted by standout performances from athletes like Erin Gray and Ethan Ross, who have earned prestigious weekly awards.
Gray, a 5th-year senior majoring in Sports Medicine and set to graduate in 2024, shared insights into her mindset and preparation that contributed to her success on the court, which led to her being named Defensive Player of the Week on September 9, 2024.
“Going into the tournament, I knew we were up against tough competition,” Gray explained. “My mindset was to just do my part for my team.”
She revealed three key strategies that help her stay focused during high-pressure moments:
“Focusing on my role, refusing to let my opponent beat me, and learning from mistakes to improve. If my opponent beats me once, I won’t let them beat me the same way again,” she said.
Gray also offered advice for younger volleyball players looking to enhance their defensive skills.
“I hope the three mindsets I follow can help younger girls gain confidence in their play,” she added, encouraging aspiring athletes to adopt a focused and resilient approach.
Week on September 10, 2024. Set to graduate in 2027, Ross is currently undecided on his major but is considering pursuing business.
Ross credits his teammates for his positive mindset heading into games.
“I knew I could rely on the guys around me, and being confident in myself. At the end of the day, it’s just playing football, and that’s what has helped me play free,” he said.
In high-pressure moments, Ross stays focused by trusting his coaches and the team’s game plan.
“By relying on the team around me and myself, I can stay cool, calm, and collected during high-pressure situations,” he stated.
He also offered some advice for younger athletes.
“Keep working through adversity because that is what can build you. There’s nothing you can’t do if you work for it.”
