As the school year kicks off, Averett University has seen significant changes on campus. Danny Miller has been promoted to interim athletic director, stepping into the role previously held by Meg Stevens. More than just a familiar face in the community, Miller has a deep connection to the university, bringing extensive knowledge and experience in Averett’s athletic programs. Throughout his career, he has consistently taken on multiple roles.
“In my career, I have consistently been doing multiple jobs,” Miller said. “It started back in the day; we did multiple things. It is just what I have always done. It has prepared me to multitask and take on new challenges.”
Miller earned his bachelor’s degree in business, management, marketing, and related support services in 1991, followed by an MBA in Business Administration and Management in 1995 from Averett. His connection to the university runs deep; he served as an assistant on the sports information staff from 1990-94, became the school’s first sports information director until 2000, and was Head Coach of Women’s Volleyball for 27 seasons starting in 1995. He also served as interim athletic director from September 2012 to July 2013. This diverse background has equipped him with a well-rounded skill set, which he continues to leverage in his role as interim director of athletics.
When discussing the future of Averett Athletics, Miller emphasized the importance of maintaining a positive mentality and striving for success despite recent financial challenges faced over the summer.
“My goal is to continue to make our programs some of the best in the country,” Miller said. “It’s not about money; it’s about what you do and what you have.”
Miller outlined both short- and long-term goals he hopes to achieve in his interim role over the coming months.
“Over the past few months, my focus has been on getting our budget in a good place and ensuring our long-term planning is solid,” he explained. “A big priority has been hiring new coaches for soccer and golf, addressing these immediate tasks to ensure we can function smoothly. Once those are sorted out, we can begin diving into long-term strategic planning.”
His response underscores the importance of immediate actions, such as budget management and staff hiring, as crucial steps for the smooth operation of Averett University’s athletic programs. Once these matters are resolved, he will shift his focus to larger strategic goals.
Although this is not Miller’s first experience in athletic directing, stepping into the role mid-year presents unique challenges. Nevertheless, he maintains a positive mindset, thanks to his previous experience, supportive staff, and adaptability.
“The hardest part is stepping in without the usual time to prepare,” Miller said. “It’s like taking over a team mid-season; you don’t get the chance to set everything up the way you want. I have been involved in athletics, but now I am the one making the decisions. The staff is used to doing things a certain way, and now we must adjust to my approach. It’s been a lot of adapting and overcoming.”
Despite the challenges he faces in this new role, Miller expressed gratitude to Averett’s leadership for their trust and support.
“It means a lot that the president and board of trustees trust me in this role without the pressure of hiring someone new, recognizing that I am a valuable resource already here,” he said. “I aim to convey appreciation and support to my team, as that’s what I’ve always felt here, and that’s what keeps me going.”
