Averett University’s athletic department is thrilled to announce Colton Dutchess as the new head coach of the women’s soccer team. Dutchess, who has previously served as the goalkeeper coach for Averett’s women’s program, steps into this role with enthusiasm and a clear vision for the future of the team. In his new role, Dutchess has transitioned smoothly from coaching men’s soccer to leading the women’s team.
“Fortunately, I had been able to serve as the goalkeeper coach Averett’s women’s program for the past two seasons,” Dutchess shared. “The transition has gone smooth. The program has been very responsive to my new ideas and coaching style. I’ve had to find a new voice by stepping into the Head Women’s Coach role, and I think they’ve been very receptive.”
Duchess noted that coaching women’s soccer presents a different dynamic compared to men’s. While both teams share passion for the game and exhibit considerable talent, the approach to coaching and team interaction can vary significantly.
“It’s definitely a different dynamic when it comes to how they interact with one another and approach the game,” he explained. “The women’s side is a lot more like a chess match, focusing on team methodology and situational management. There’s a lot of talent and similarities between both programs, but I would say the women’s side listens a lot better.” Entering his first season as head coach, Duchess is trying a few different things.
“On the field, I’ve been working to increase the team’s confidence in their skills. This year, we want to play a lot more possession-based soccer,” he said.
This approach prioritizes teamwork and wise decision-making. Our main goals are to increase players’ self-assurance when handling the ball and motivate them to contribute to the squad. With an eye toward the upcoming season, Duchess has set high standards for the group.
“We established new standards and a lot of targets during the preseason. It’s important to approach every game with the mindset of a competitor, no matter who the opponent is. “We should at the very least aim to return to the conference tournament,” he said.
Duchess extends an invitation to the community to come to their next home game for those who are excited to cheer on the team.
