The Averett University football team has officially welcomed new Offensive Coordinator, Tim Reynolds Jr. to the Cougars. Reynolds is a familiar face to teams that are now in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) and has continued to show signs of expertise early with the cougars. Being born and raised in Arlington, Virginia, he has always had football as a part of his life.
“My father put a football in my hand at a very young age,” Reynolds said. “… And I’ve been playing ever since I was six.”
Football was not the only sport up Reynold’s sleeve. While in high school he was heavily recruited to play basketball as well, along with playing soccer and lacrosse. With a lot of eyes on him, Reynolds decided to commit to Florida A&M, where he played football before transferring to Ferrum.
After transferring, Reynolds was able to make a name for himself again by winning Offensive Player of the Year with the Ferrum Panthers in the 2012 season. This same season helped the Ferrum Panthers to take the USA South title.
In his senior year at Ferrum, Reynolds career ended abruptly after breaking his leg late in the season, which led him to coaching. Before coming to Averett, he coached for the NAIA program St. Andrews, where he was a part of that program for six years before becoming the Quarterbacks coach for Bridgewater College.
“I had a spiral fracture in my tibia and fibula,” Reynolds said. “I had a lot of places to go, but I just decided I wasn’t the same player anymore so I knew I wanted to be a coach, I just didn’t know what level.”
At St. Andrews (Laurinburg, North Carolina), Reynolds filled in a lot of positions, from associate head coach all the way to equipment manager, and helped St. Andrews first ever All-American. With his exceptional coaching skills he was honored as the NAIA Senior Bowl Classic offensive coordinator, as well as the 2022 Podyum All-Star Bowl head coach.
“College (coaching) was definitely my calling.” Reynolds said. “I wanted to come to Averett because I saw a lot of potential with Coach Henry, and actually getting on campus for the interview made me feel at home.”
