As graduation is coming around, there are a lot of students who may not know what they want to do after receiving their degree. There are also a lot of students who are truly prepared for the real world. When it comes to starting your career, you are going to want to be prepared and keep your brand clean so that you can appear as the more qualified candidate.
When interviewing Kameron Morris, Assistant Director of Student Engagement at Averett University, she was able to give advice about ways to dig deeper into your career field.
“Whatever field (you) see yourself working in, go to those specific major professors, so for example if you’re interested in health then go to someone in that field to network and see what connections they have,” Morris said.
Morris also made sure to put emphasis on having the correct documentation for job searching.
“Always, always have a resume, even work-studys and events done on campus should be on your resume because it’s a job that you had and it is experience,” Morris said.
When beginning your career, it is easy to get stuck into your major and only look for jobs that are representing your major. On the contrary, only 46% of college graduates are going to gain a career in their field. Being able to find out who you are after college will be essential to picking the right career once you have finally walked that stage.
“Don’t be surprised if when you graduate that you’re not in the exact field that you studied for,” Morris said. “I got my bachelors in health promotion and public health, but here I am in education.”
Keeping yourself open to opportunities can be the difference between finding your dream job and finding yourself stuck in the mud. You may find something new you’re interested in afterwards and you can build into that career field through the proper networking channels.
