February 4th was not a usual day on campus, at Averett University National Girls and Woman in Sports Day was celebrated. All around the globe, this day serves as a reminder of the progress made in advancing gender equity in athletics. It highlights the importance of providing equal opportunities for girls and women to participate in sports at all levels.
At Averett University there are 12 women’s sports that contribute to more females being successful in women’s sports. By participating in college sports females develop leadership skills, build competition, and teamwork. Whether they pursue careers in sports or other fields, the lessons learned through college athletics will stay forever.
Sigrid Lycksaeter, a freshman from Stockholm, Sweden, majoring in business management is proud to be one of the seven women on the Averett Golf Team.
“As a female college golfer, I can say that golf isn’t just about hitting the perfect shot, it’s about facing challenges and proving that gender is never a limitation when it comes to pursuing your passion,” Lycksaeter said. “Annika Sörenstam, one of the greatest female golfers of all time, has always been my biggest inspiration and idol. She showed me that consistency and mental toughness are key to being successful.”
Also, the Averett Tennis team represents one of the women’s teams on campus. All the way from Munich, Germany is freshman Annika Kellerer, who talks about her goals as a female tennis player.
“For me, the court isn’t just a place for matches; it’s a stage where girls showcase their brilliance, and spirit, ”Kellerer said. “As a college athlete, every day is a new opportunity to grow, learn, and become the best version of yourself, both on and off the court. I want to win conference this year and with our strong girls, we have a realistic chance.”
Jordan Booker, a softball player in her freshman year also expressed her feelings towards being a female athlete.
“For me, it can sometimes be challenging to balance my social life, softball, and academics, but as long as I have my priorities straight, I know my dreams and can work towards them,” Booker said. “I hope to make an impact in college and beyond. My goal is to set an example for all the girls wanting to continue with their sport in college.”
At Averett University we can be proud to have so many wonderful female athletes that set an example for young girls. Being a woman in sports means shattering stereotypes and proving that strength knows no gender. It is important to celebrate February 4th and maintain this positive attitude all year.
