With the fall season slowly creeping up on us here in Danville, means another beautiful football season is coming to town. With the addition of 6 new coaches to the staff, the Averett football team can already see a difference within the team. Averett is currently 2-0 as the date of this publication after wins against The Apprentice School and Greensboro College.
“I think it’s cool to have new faces and new perspectives with the new coaches,” Bryce Jackson, a fifth year senior quarterback, said. “They have definitely come in and brought some new stuff to the table with the experiences they’ve had from former universities and it’s clicked well so far with the guys.”
A key factor to the season is that Averett University will be going into their second year competing in the ODAC. Averett was able to have a lot of returning players come back this year with the common goal of winning conference.
“I think after a year under our belt in the ODAC we know what to expect competitively. We have a lot of guys who have played a lot of snaps and have lots of experience, with a mixture of young talent to make plays,” Jackson said. “It’s fun learning from one another and pushing each other to see how great this team truly wants to be, and I think we’re taking the steps in the right direction for that to come to fruition.”
A cultural shift brought into the football program with the new coaches has helped the team shift their focus to producing a better season than last year.
“I look forward to seeing how well we respond after last year.” Jackson said. “In the offseason up till now you can see a shift in how guys go about business.”
With the season starting up, the excitement of getting out on the field and accomplishing the team goal of making the new addition of a bowl game at the end of the season is high.
“I think we have a good group of older guys that I can’t wait to see how we continue to gel and get better week by week,” Jackson said. “The goal is to play week 11 in the playoffs or a bowl game, and I believe we have the pieces to make that happen.”
