As the fall semester commences, the campus is a buzz with energy as both new and returning students gathered for Welcome Week, August 19th – August 23rd 2024. This year’s events, ranging from club fairs to late-night socials, offered a diverse array of activities designed to help students explore their interests, forge connections, and immerse themselves in campus life.
“The primary goal for Welcome Week was to ensure that every student felt welcomed and to kick off the academic year with enthusiasm,” Kam Morris, director of student involvement, said. “We wanted to set a high standard and ensure students know there’s more to come.”
Morgan Dearing, a graduate student assistant and assistant director for student involvement, added, “The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Events like the ice cream social and bowling night were particularly well-received, and we’re excited to build on this momentum.”
Looking ahead, the Student Involvement team is gearing up for an exciting lineup of activities, including roller skating and a block party for Homecoming. Morris emphasized the department’s commitment to inclusivity.
“We strive to include everyone, from transfer students and international students to commuters, and we work closely with various clubs and organizations to make this happen,” she said.
Despite the enthusiasm, organizing large-scale events presents challenges. Morris noted that balancing diverse programming to appeal to all students remains a priority. “Given the unique needs of the COVID-era class, we’ve been focused on keeping students engaged and on their toes.”
Leadership roles among students play a crucial part in shaping these events.
“Student perspectives are invaluable,” Morris explained. “Organizations like CAB and SGA are instrumental in integrating student ideas into our planning process.”
Two student leaders shared their perspectives on Welcome Week. Jocelin Jones, Vice President and Event Coordinator of CAB and President of BSU reflected, “My favorite event was the play fair. It was particularly impactful for freshmen, allowing them to relax and make connections.”
Darius Eubanks, BSU Treasurer, expressed his desire for future events, saying, “I’d love to see a bake-off featuring international dishes. It would be a great way to showcase different cultures.”
In summary, Welcome Week successfully set the stage for a dynamic and engaging semester, with a range of events and opportunities for students to get involved and make the most of their university experience.
