In the past three years, Averett’s Department of Athletics has added four new programs, including men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s wrestling, and esports. This year, Averett continues to progress with the newest addition of a competitive dance team that is hoping to launch its program in the 2019-2020 academic year.

Alexis Harris has been tapped as the dance team’s first coach.

Harris qualified for the position due to her extensive background in dance. She was a four-year member of Limestone College’s dance team (2013-17). For two of those years, Harris served as a team captain, helping the team win the 2016 and 2017 Cheer LTD National Championship in hip-hop and the 2016 championship in open variety.

Harris has remained actively involved with dance both at Limestone College and in her hometown, Spartanburg, South Carolina. She served as a game day choreographer for LC’s dance team as well as the assistant dance coach at Spartanburg Preparatory School in 2018.

“Averett’s new dance team will be an excellent addition to game days in addition to the cheerleaders and pep band,” Sports Information Director Drew Wilson said. “In my experience working many college athletics events at different levels, I’ve seen firsthand how a dance team can positively enhance the atmosphere for teams and our fans.”

The new dance team will perform at football and basketball games in upcoming years, utilizing Carrington Gym on Averett’s main campus to practice and choreograph their routines.

Students and faculty alike are excited for the new addition to the Averett athletics family, believing that the team will be an asset to the university and its game day atmosphere.

“I think adding the dance program will continue to diversify Averett and our athletics department,” Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) President Emily Stanley said. “With this new program, we will be able to give current students another option to find a place they call home on campus, while bringing new students into our community.”

With the addition of new sports in the previous year, SAAC has already implemented new events to support them and are looking to do the same with the involvement of the new competitive dance team.

“SAAC will also be able to benefit from this addition by adding more representatives to our organization while educating and helping this [dance] program fit into our Averett family,” Stanley said.

Due to the popularity of competitive dance in local and regional communities, Averett is hoping that the addition will allow for potential students to continue pursuing their passions at the collegiate level while also attaining a bachelor’s degree.
